BIG TAKEOVER - JACK RABID (MAY 2013)
"Leckie (ex-wife of The Viletones' Steve Leckie) is a longtime fixture on the downtown New York scene with her folk-rock band Lorraine Leckie & Her Demons. A couple of Demons are here, but Leckie's main collaborator is author/cartooniest/bon vivant Haden-Guest, who contributes the darkly humorous lyrics. Much of the music is light-hearted folk, but "Like Camelot," the only place where a drum (a lone floor tom) is heard, is haunting and by far the most striking track, droning under such lyrcis as, "I have lived in Utopia/It was paradise in an open bar" and "Back in the olden golden age/After the pill and before the plagues/It was a lot like Camelot/No crack, just wine and pot." Perhaps to lighten the mood, it's followed by the only track which Haden-Guest is heard, the sardonically apocalyptic "Goodbye To All This," which includes the couplet "The whole world's drowning/J.G. Ballard wasn't clowning." White this one-off may be the least ambitious album I've reviewed here, it is also the most fun."
